Yardbarker (www.yardbarker.com) is a hot Bay Area startup that is revolutionizing sports media by enabling fans and pro athletes to blog and interact with each other. We are the blogging home for many prominent athletes, including Greg Oden, Donovan McNabb, Baron Davis, Carmelo Anthony, and Dontrelle Willis.
We are very well-funded and serious about building a high quality team. Our current team brings experience from ESPN.com, Disney Online, Napster and Ofoto, and our investors include well known VCs and superstar athletes.
Our style is fast-paced and our process is designed to make us very responsive to our users. We are growing rapidly and we need help. Our traffic increased 2000% in 2007, and the pace is continuing in 2008. We use an agile development process, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, etc., and we are continually adding/improving everything. We need superstar (or future superstar) developers who want to join our team and contribute to building a world-class sports destination online.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Be involved in all areas of the Yardbarker application, from the front-end (CSS, HTML, AJAX, Flash, etc.) to the application layer (Ruby on Rails) to the DB (MySQL).
- Build cutting-edge features using the latest Web 2.x technologies.
- Enhance existing systems and implement new ones to help grow Yardbarker’s capacity by multiple orders of magnitude.
- Must be able to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately with people at all levels of the organization, both verbally and in writing; and must demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills and diplomacy.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- 3+ years development experience or equivalent (with significant responsibility) in a high-volume web environment. You have designed and implemented software systems on your own, or as the leader of a team or;
- You are super-smart and motivated, and can convince us that we should hire you anyway.
- You are excited to work in a start-up.
- Very good SQL and data model skills.
- Excellent OOP skills and knowledge of design patterns.
- Solid UNIX/LINUX knowledge.
- Solid experience with standard web languages/protocols (HTML / HTTP / Javascript / CSS).
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, self-direction.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excitement about life. And a passion for building something great.
BONUS POINTS:
- Hands-on experience with at least one Ruby on Rails deployment, and knowledge of Rails-related tools and practices.
- Expert-level skills in CSS/HTML.
- Experience building database-driven Flash applications.
- Experience in designing, building, and growing large server farms.
- You like sports.
Compensation will be a negotiable combination of cash and equity and includes health benefits.
