The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a talented and committed Lead Web Developer for its New Media Department. The Lead Web Developer will oversee the design, development, and implementation of software packages for dynamic Web sites.

Principal responsibilities include:

  • Determine best practices for web application development for the web development team to follow and designs, develops, implements, and maintains software packages for Web sites.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and implement software code.
  • Provide technical assistance in identifying, evaluating, and developing solutions.
  • Provide insight and evaluation regarding the latest technological solutions as they pertain to The Chronicle’s Web development and implementation objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative work environment between Project Manager and web development staff.
  • Act as initial escalation point for issues and problems associated with applications performance and deliverables.
  • Act as the main contact for managed hosting provider and other vendors as applicable.

Qualifications include 5-7 years of experience using open source technologies to build dynamic Web applications with two years supervisory or technical lead experience. In addition, this position requires expert knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures in MySQL, Apache, Linux, and PHP, knowledge of project management principles, experience with HTML/XHTML/CSS/XML/Javascript and systems administration.

It is vital to be self-motivated, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, have the ability to work in a collaborative deadline-driven environment, and pay close attention to detail. This position is located in Washington D.C. and candidates must be able to work locally.
