A small, dynamic, and creative software group is looking for an IT senior programmer/manager to join our team in Troy, NY. The Center for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (CEES) is a research center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) performing leading edge research in the Earthquake Engineering field on its large research centrifuge. The selected candidate will be hired to lead a small dynamic IT group working with a wide range of technologies including some of the latest programming languages and frameworks. Our many software development projects are very different in scope and range. The center’s supported tools range from 3D cross-platform visualization applications to web portals.
We encourage the use of new innovative technologies, programming languages, frameworks, and platforms where appropriate. Successful candidate will be assigned new complex projects and solving those will require acquiring a breadth of knowledge in systems architecture and project management. Beyond software development the candidate will be involved in all other facets of IT work in the center, from IT infrastructure management to proposal and paper writings and submission.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successful software development, systems architecture, and leadership experience. He must be a quick learner willing to learn new technologies and mentor the other IT staff into constantly bettering their technical skills. A strong ability to anticipate and solve problems is critical. The job will involve frequent interactions with researchers therefore the candidate will need strong communication skills as well as the ability to quickly understand the needs of the users and provide them with the desired solutions. Candidates with a background in usability and experience providing user-friendly user interfaces will be favorably considered.
The following are the preferred skills we are looking for in potential candidates:
• BS/BA in computer science or equivalent
• 2+ years of work experience in a software development position.
• Experience with desktop application development, either in Java or .NET (preferably using C#)
• Experience with web application development (preferably in PHP/Ruby/Python)
• Experience with SQL and relational databases
• Experience in successfully leading a software development project
