THE CHALLENGE
In many critical care settings such as the Intensive Care Unit, sampling and testing of blood is required on a frequent basis in order to appropriately manage the health of ICU patients. Unfortunately, due to the large workload and shortage of intensivists and critical care nurses, blood sampling and testing are not performed at the appropriate frequencies in order to make timely decisions regarding the care of these patients. For example, several published studies show that frequent monitoring of blood glucose in the ICU significantly reduces mortality and morbidity across many different disease states, which has led to increasing advocacy for adoption of Intensive Insulin Therapy protocols. However, implementation of these protocols has been very difficult due to the time required to sample and test blood glucose using current point of care equipment.
