*Position Overview*

This position reports to the Director of User Experience. The Senior User Researcher will establish a user research and usability practice within a newly-created software design process, and will help hire and mentor junior-level user researchers.

The ideal candidate thrives on using the power of social science to improve software: designing and conducting activities, analyzing and reporting results, and always striving to produce meaningful user-powered insights and recommendations.

The ideal candidate is very comfortable gathering data early and often, using conceptual prototypes, task flows, low-fidelity wireframes and other design tools to clarify and refine potential new solutions.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is comfortable taking ownership and will set a high standard for junior-level user researchers.

The ideal candidate is an excellent verbal communicator: empathetic yet objective, an unobtrusive ethnographer, a poised moderator behind the glass or in a focus group, and comfortable as the voice of the user in detailed discussions with executives and various stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is an excellent written communicator, who can both produce quick and concise preliminary results/recommendations, as well as detailed and well-annotated reports.

*Qualifications*

•3+ years of professional software research experience, preferably web applications and/or websites, using a wide range of techniques including ethnographic field research, usability testing, surveys and task analysis
•Experience with a variety of qualitative and quantitative testing methods
•Proven ability to help establish UCD best practices and innovate on process tools and conventions, within a cross-discipline environment
•Familiar with good user interface principles such as: metaphors, direct manipulation, user control, feedback, and error tolerance
•Experience with statistics and experimental design practices. At ease with statistical analysis tools and data-mining packages
•Experience producing executive summaries as well as detailed final reports (please be prepared to share samples of each)
•Degree in HCI, Human Factors, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Ethnography, Anthropology, Information Design or related discipline required
•Must be able to work on-site

*Responsibilities*

•Create user-centric standards, heuristics, research/testing methodologies
•Conduct a variety of primary and secondary research activities to identify user needs, and evaluate concepts and designs with users.
•Contribute or manage resources in the preparation of materials, retention of lab environments, recruitment and scheduling of participants
•Gather data early and often, using conceptual designs, task flows, low-fidelity wireframes and other tools to clarify and refine potential new solutions.
•Use a variety of analysis tools to interpret data and identify key findings
•Translate findings into specific, actionable recommendations
•Collaborate with designers to communicate recommendations using experience models, diagrams, prototypes and other relevant techniques
•Create and deliver results presentations to cross-functional teams, stakeholders and executives
•Strategize with User Experience, Strategists, Development, Sales and Support on how best to implement research findings
•Verify that a product design meets expectations for usefulness and satisfaction before moving into production
•Stay up-to-date with relevant research publications, communities, and trends
