The Opportunity:
Join a well-funded Web 2.0 startup in the Northern Virginia area and help us build Version-1.0 of VisualCV.com. VisualCV will revolutionize personal career management and provide a new way of managing talent for Fortune 500 companies worldwide. We’re driven by some of the top entrepreneurs and financial backers in the Washington, DC tech community.
We’re all about Ruby on Rails. Come work with us and you’ll get a chance to work with the latest web technology and be mentored by some of the top names in the Rails community. Once we launch, we will become one of the larger Ruby on Rails production implementations on the planet. We’re initially running on a load-balanced cluster of Linux (RH) servers running Ruby on Rails, Mongrel, Apache, and PostgreSQL. We’re using Amazon Web Services (AWS) like S3 and EC2 for managing our multimedia data (images, video, etc.).
We’re looking for someone who will manage our production architecture as a Senior Systems Administrator or IT Operations Manager. We need someone to form the core of a production operations team and also provide in-house systems administration for the company as we grow.
The ideal candidate is a battle-hardened IT support veteran that has seen it all (sometimes in the middle of the night). You’ve managed systems that run in large scale production environments including clustering, replication, and solid disaster recovery. You believe in bulletproof operational processes and near-infinite uptime. You’re ready for some technically challenging work that stretches the state-of-the-art to the bleeding edge. You’re eager to work on the next great Web 2.0 application.
It’s going to be lots of fun. You’ll be working in a small, agile development environment with very little corporate overhead to get in the way. We’re fast moving, highly energetic, and prize great programming chops above all else. We’ve already got a multi-year roadmap of great product features to build.
We’ll give you a healthy base compensation with a significant performance bonus. As an early member of the team you’ll have an opportunity for an equity stake in the success of VisualCV.com. Even as a startup, we provide full benefits, including fully paid-for family health benefits.
What you’ll be doing at VisualCV.com:
1. Day-to-day operation of our enterprise-class Web 2.0 production suite
2. Working with product development on future production architecture design
3. Coordination with QA and Ops on build management & release migration procedures
4. Designing redundancy, replication, and disaster recovery for our production suite
5. In-house system administration & general IT support for a rapidly growing software startup
What we’re looking for in the perfect candidate:
• An Undisputed UNIX guru
• Lived Linux-based development for mission-critical, large-scale production deployments
• Solid network administration skills (DNS, DHCP, etc.)
• Nginx or Apache 2.x administration
• Mail Administration (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, virus/spam mgmt)
• Equipment procurement & vendor management
• Hosting provider management
• Ability to create, document, and enforce operational procedures
• Passionate ownership of the stability and security of our production environment
Would be great if you also had these:
• Mongrel and enterprise-class Ruby on Rails production support, including clustering, load balancing, and performance tuning
• Ruby on Rails administration tools (Subversion, Rake, Capistrano, Monit, etc.)
• Production server admin experience in a high-availability, secure web e-Commerce environment
• PostgreSQL administration (you don’t have to be a full-scale DBA)
• PC/Mac workstation support (ad hoc, not your primary function)
• Security administration (production lockdown, firewall config, intrusion detection, auditing, etc.)
• SSL Certificate Management
How to earn “Extra Credit”:
• Be active in the Rails Community (code contributor, blogger, conference speaker, trainer, etc.)
• Have a stack of well-worn books from Pragmatic Programmers and O’Reilly at your desk
• Know how to manage Slony database replication
• Show experience with video processing on the web
• Have integrated Lucene, TSearch, or other search technologies with web applications
• Worked with phpBB, SMF, vBulletin, or other open-source forums applications
• Worked with Joomla, Drupal, or other open-source content management systems
• Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) like S3 and EC2
