Scribd is a San Francisco startup backed by top investors including Redpoint Ventures, the Kinsey Hills Group, Y Combinator and a handful of Silicon Valley’s most prestigious angel investors. We are changing the way people share documents online. Since Scribd launched in March 2007, it has become one of the top 500 websites on the Internet, receiving over 20 million monthly visitors. According to the Rails 100 list of the the most trafficked rails websites, Scribd is the largest rails website in the world: http://rails100.pbwiki.com/Alexa+Rankings.

Scribd created iPaper, the first document format built for the web. Like YouTube’s player did for video formats, iPaper standardizes all document formats into one viewer that can be seamlessly integrated into webpages. Through Scribd.com, iPaper and the Scribd platform, Scribd is changing the say people view, publish and monetize documents. Through our vast library of content and our unique document display technology, we hope to unlock the information in the world’s documents and make it readily accessible to everyone!

We are located in the heart of downtown San Francisco, close to CalTrain, BART and MUNI. Our small team is passionate, talented, motivated and fun. You’ll often find us holding group brainstorming sessions, eating lunch and dinner as a team, playing winner-take-all ping-pong games and celebrating our successes along the way. We offer competitive salaries, benefits, generous equity stakes, flexible work hours, free food from local restaurants and a stocked break room.

The job:

This is a senior development role on the iPaper product. iPaper is the first full-featured web-based document viewer. For years, the standard in cross-platform document viewing has been Adobe PDF, a desktop software solution invented twenty years ago. iPaper is a new Flash-based document viewing standard that is positioned to shake up this billion dollar industry because it runs completely in a web browser and is faster and lighter than Acrobat. Despite the importance of iPaper, the team that works on it is still tiny, and you will have a huge impact on the product.

The ideal profile:

This is not a typical Flash programming role. iPaper is an unusually complex Flash application with many highly technical components. We are looking for someone who is a well-rounded computer scientist in addition to an expert Flash developer. This would be demonstrated by a CS degree, knowledge of more traditional programming environments, or projects which show deep engineering ability. We love to see candidates who have worked on impressive Flash applications that they can demonstrate for us. We favor candidates who can show us they have a keen product sense and will contribute good ideas for improving the product.

Responsibilities:

Extend and improve the iPaper product, adding new features and refining existing functionality. Think creatively about the future of iPaper, generate feature ideas, and integrate them into the product roadmap. Architect our internal document format, manipulate SWF byte-code directly, and solve difficult technical problems.

Qualifications:

  • 1+ years experience with Flash and ActionScript
  • Experience with Flex, AS 3.0, OOP, and Unit Testing
  • Strong understanding of Flash’s rendering process and optimization
  • Experience integrating Flash with external APIs and Web Services
  • Strong computer science fundamentals as evidenced by a CS degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL or C++ is a plus

This position reports to the CTO.
