We’re looking for a hard-working hot-shot willing to help us build the best news site in Colorado.
You’ll need to be creative and have a talent for turning mountains of mundane numbers and information into dynamic web applications that will inform and entertain our users. We’re also looking for someone with ideas about how to entice those users to interact with RockyMountainNews.com and each other.
Being a team player is a must, as you will work with a small but dedicated web staff of developers and producers who are passionate about their work. Denver is a competitive news town, so you’ll also need to be fast.
You’ll get a chance to work with Ellington, the Django-based, open-source content-management platform, the choice of a growing number of multimedia news organizations nationwide. And you’ll also have plenty of opportunities to innovate and experiment.
The Rocky Mountain News, Colorado’s oldest newspaper and winner of four Pulitzer Prizes, sits in the heart of downtown Denver, overlooking Civic Center Park and the Rocky Mountains. The company offers an employee gym, paid vacation, sick and holiday time, four choices in health plans, a dental plan and vision discount program, short-term disability and 401(k) plan. We also offer career development opportunities including tuition reimbursement.
What you should have is:
• Demonstrated expertise with XHTML/CSS/XML/DOM scripting. Django or Python experience is preferred, but we’ll talk to anyone with a solid record in using open-source programming languages and a template-based CMS.
• User-focused thinking. You’ll be dedicated to applying web design standards, search engine optimization, and web-development best practices in everything you do.
• An understanding of databases. Everything we do has a database underneath, and that knowledge also will come in handy in supporting our newsroom’s focus on data projects.
A snowboard or skis, pair of hiking boots and love of sunlight, mountains and life are also encouraged. Journalism experience not a must. But successful candidates will have a passion for the public service a news organization can provide.
