Job Summary:

The Senior Web Applications/Software Developer helps develop Northwestern’s web sites. The incumbent implements content management systems, maintaining sites in team environment. The position requires expert-level ability using CSS and XHTML to create table-less layouts, in depth understanding of cross-browser, front-end development issues, proficiency with JavaScript and the ability to write intermediate level JavaScript/DHTML. The incumbent must also have experience with source control/version control applications. The abilities to mentor a team, ensure deadlines are met and oversee all stages of development process are essential to the position. Candidates must provide a cover letter and 3 URLs of sites developed.

Candidates for this position should be prepared to work after hours and on weekends, as necessary to complete assignments satisfactorily and meet deadlines.

Principle accountabilities:

Performing project management and research analysis;
Developing and maintaining pages and technical features for top-level web pages and university clients;
Leading or supporting development of the university’s existing web applications (the online calendar, search engine, online maps and content management system) and researching and implementing new university-wide applications;
Working closely with web designers to create prototype sites for university clients, creating and building cross-platform-compatible XHTML sites and templates, working with applications developers to integrate back-end infrastructure with the front-end and resolve platform and programming issues;
Critiquing official University web sites for appropriate function, content, and design;
Testing all projects throughout production to ensure functionality in a multiplatform/multi-browser environment;
Continuing to develop XHTML and development skills specific to Internet use, while maintaining knowledge base of current technology;
Educating staff and Web Steering Committee on current web development philosophy and new development techniques/software/hardware;
Performing other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in computer science or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
Demonstrated web development skills (at least 3 URLs);
3+ years building and supporting large-scale sites (concept to completion);
Expertise in XHTML development tools on Mac, PC and Unix systems;
Demonstrable proficiency in XML, server-side scripting languages (Perl, Java, PHP, ColdFusion) and web/database interactivity (SQL);
Knowledge of Content Management Systems;
Thorough knowledge of the differences in web browsers, operating systems and current web technologies;
Experience in a university or highly decentralized corporate environment with career emphasis on customer service;
Skills in graphics and multimedia programs;
Excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills and the ability to work well on a team and to be self-motivated;
Excellent time and project management skills, such as the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, plan and implement projects according to specifications report project status and identify delays or resource shortages;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Ability to identify, assess and resolve web development problems and the ability to determine/describe how technology tools may contribute to a web solution;
Knowledge of usability and accessibility issues;
Energy and enthusiasm for this type of work along with a clear desire to continue to develop and grow in knowledge and expertise.
