New York Times: Interface Engineer

Location: New York NY

URL: www.nytco.com

The successful candidate must be a skilled and creative visual journalist, who can take a project from conception to design to deployment at newsroom speed. This person must be fluent in a number of front-end technologies, including Javascript, AJAX, HTML and CSS. Experience with Flash/ActionScript is a plus. Also critical is an attention to detail, a pride in the quality of one’s work and the ability to meet deadlines.

Although newsroom experience is a plus, it is not a requirement. However, the successful candidate must be comfortable operating in a newsroom environment, which can be fast-paced, fluid and often unpredictable. Project priorities and deadlines may shift at a moment’s notice, so the ability to work without constant supervision and to juggle multiple projects is a must.

Salary commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced Javascript abilities: 5-7 years of Javascript development experience
  • 2+ years of AJAX development experience, with in-depth knowledge of available Javascript libraries and frameworks
  • Expert-level CSS and HTML; the ability to create complex, table-less layouts implemented using CSS and semantically correct markup
  • Thorough understanding of cross-browser, front-end development issues
  • Deep understanding of the principles of the concepts of web accessibility and user centered design/development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; this position will require coordinating development efforts and communicating across groups both technical and non-technical
  • CS degree or equivalent experience
  • Ruby on Rails experience a plus
