The New York Times is looking to add a skilled, creative Web developer/designer to its Interactive Newsroom Technology team. This person must have outstanding technical skills (HTML/CSS/Javascript) and an interest in producing online journalism.
The position is technical, but is based in The New York Times newsroom. This person will work closely with graphic artists, reporters and editors on stories and long-term projects.
The environment is fluid and sometimes downright hectic. But in return, this person will have an extraordinary amount of creative freedom to explore new ways of presenting news and information online. That means non-linear storytelling through maps, dynamic graphics, searchable databases, document repositories, visualizations and other dynamic means of presenting the news and the stories behind the news.
The successful candidate must be fluent in a number of front-end technologies, including Javascript, AJAX, HTML and CSS. Experience with Flash/ActionScript and/or Ruby on Rails is a plus. Also critical is an attention to detail, a pride in the quality of one’s work and the ability to meet deadlines.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Qualifications:
- Advanced Javascript abilities and AJAX experience
- Expert-level CSS and HTML
- Thorough understanding of cross-browser, front-end development issues
- Deep understanding of the principles of web accessibility and user-centered design/development
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
