Using state-of-the-art technologies you will work closely with the Manager of Online Systems Integration to enhance the online publishing capabilities of the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal Watch family of professional newsletters.

Responsibilities include defining and implementing solutions according to the strategic initiatives of the organization, and working with others in IT and business units to design, implement and support web infrastructures. It is estimated that primary responsibilities will involve approximately 80% system and process design and architecture, and 20% development.

Responsibilities:

1. Partners with web producers and business stakeholders to define software, best practices, system architecture and design recommendations and infrastructure specifications and requirements for enhancements to dynamic and secure web sites and web-based applications using ASP.NET 2.0, JavaScript, XML, JSON, JQuery, SOAP and RESTful web services, and other cutting edge front-end and middle-tier technologies and standards.

2. Develops statements of work, estimates, and plans, and assesses client needs to determine ideal architectural solutions, and creates proofs-of-concept and prototype applications.

3. Acts as a bridge between middle-tier application developers, web designers, content management professionals, and infrastructure teams, both internally and at external partners.

4. Creates and documents design models, spearheads configuration management and build process, escalates development issues as needed, and contributes to quality assurance operations.

5. Works with product leads and implementation teams to meet business priorities and the needs of end users; proactively offers suggestions and solutions to business problems.

6. Serves as system expert for new platforms and procedures. Assists in solving complications that may arise, guiding developers in debugging, systems development, and code reviews, and participating in trouble-shooting and production problem escalation.

7. Proposes solutions to streamline business processes.

8. Researches and shares information on current industry trends, assists with the development and promotion of coding best practices within the organization, and evaluates and recommends new technologies – including commercially available software—for solution architecture, contributing skills and knowledge to other database and reporting projects as determined by management.

The ideal candidate will have:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and 7 years experience with responsibility for designing and developing rich, multi-tiered, data-driven web applications are required.

- Experience in development and use of web services (SOAP and RESTful) and of web-based syndication formats like Atom, RSS, iTunes extensions. Experience with .NET 2.0 development and deployment tools and methodologies required, including background in componentized interface development with .NET master pages, user and server controls, themes, and web parts.

- Must be proficient in HTML, XHTML, and CSS for positioning. XML skills are required, including proficiency with XPath, XSLT, Schema/DTD development, and DOM programming; XSL-FO, XQuery, and XML database experience desirable.

- JavaScript and AJAX skills are a top priority.

- Strong knowledge of SEO techniques highly desired, as is background in web analytic and tracking techniques such as page and event tagging.

- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, ability to work closely and collaboratively with teams to create best-of-breed applications necessary. Good visual design sense, understanding of usability principles and familiarity with database design and backend application-development principles.
