Marine Biological Laboratory: Scientific Informatics Software Developer

The MBL is assembling a team of biodiversity informaticians that are developing the infrastructure that underpins the Encyclopedia of Life project (http://www.eol.org). We invite applications for full-time fixed-term positions at a range of skill levels and experience. Applicants should have training or experience in software development or be trained biologists with proven computing skills or. The team will collectively assemble innovative, ever-evolving, modular, user-friendly web applications relating to the management, integration, and delivery of information about organisms. The user community will be very wide-ranging, from the general public to expert biologists.
Additional Information: The successful applicants will contribute to a major multi-institutional biodiversity initiative that will deliver web pages for all organisms. The project will use names-based databases, tools, services and web-based applications that incorporate taxonomic principles and practices in the management of information about organisms on the internet and aggregation technology (mashups). The project will actively develop Web 2.0 applications. Applicants should be imaginative, able to work within teams, flexible to accommodate changing priorities, and have good verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Applicants will be expected to openly share their knowledge with the team and collaborators, and will be expected to participate actively in on-line discussions and attend scientific and inter-institutional team meetings if requested. The duty statement for each position will be determined in dialog with the applicants and will take account of the composition of the team and the skills and experience of the applicants. The positions are based in the Biodiversity Informatics group at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA. Priority will be given to applicants who will locate to Woods Hole, but applications for ‘e-commuting’ will be considered.
Basic Qualifications: The successful candidates will have at least 2-3 years experience in software development, internet services, and/or biological data management. An interest in or understanding of biology is preferred but not required. Candidates for Scientific Informatics Developer positions will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience. The infrastructure is Linux based, with most code written in Ruby on Rails and PHP referencing a MySQL database back-end. The software development team utilizes an agile development methodology, so experience with agile techniques and object-oriented programming is highly desirable. Appropriate computing skills for all applicants include, but may not be limited to, expertise with Ruby on Rails, PHP, MySQL, XML, RESTful and SOAP web services, structured schema development in XML and RDF, and transfer and harvesting protocols (e.g. OAI-PMH, DiGIR, TAPIR). Knowledge of hardware architecture, work flow, web site design and maintenance are desirable. Funding is available for 1 year with continuation highly anticipated.
