Who we’re looking for
Marchex has a team of world class system administrators, DBA’s, and network engineers and we are looking to add a superstar systems administrator. You should be willing to solve scaling challenges at the infrastructure level and more importantly avoid scaling issues by challenging the development team at the design level.
We run a mixed production shop with Oracle, Linux, Apache, Tomcat, and MySQL as well as MS SQL Server, Active Directory, and Windows. To be successful you should have at least a couple years of System Administration experience on Unix and Windows; however we would love to be proved wrong so don’t let that stop you if you know you have the skills.

A bit about the job
As a Linux Systems Administrator you will be responsible for the systems architecture and operational aspects of our products.
Some of the specific duties include
Design, configure and maintain Marchex production servers and network components (routers, switches, load balancers).
Provide problem management support for the production site and services - troubleshoot technical problems as they arise, design and implement long term solutions.
Performance and capacity planning: monitor, reconfigure and tune hardware and software for performance improvements and future scalability.
Facilitate the planning of system and feature upgrades, including participating in off-hours service outage upgrades.
Develop automation and productivity tools/applications for production operations infrastructure environments, enhancing operational tracking/reporting responsibilities, and integrating access/authentication across environments.
Targeted Qualifications
5+ years of system administration experience. Linux-based environment is preferred. Experience in a mixed-O/S environment is a plus.
Deep understanding of multiple OS environments, Debian or RedHat preferred.
2+ years experience with system and application services scripting and general programming languages - including Perl and shell scripting. Additional scripting or programming language exposure and experience a bonus.
2+ years experience with network administration, including a full understanding of network routing and protocol concepts and their application, Cisco hardware and IOS, VPN and IPSec, load balancers and firewall architectures and implementation.
2+ years experience utilizing and tuning one or more of the following technologies: apache, tomcat, JBOSS, memcache, MySQL, tinydns.. SAN knowledge is a plus.
