About the position: Director of Software Development

Our team works very well together, so this role will be more about coordination and eliminating roadblocks than managing personalities and motivation. As the leader of development — the team at the heart of a company-wide effort involving Product Management, QA, and Operations — YOU will have the key responsibility to keep the releases on schedule.

The right candidate will:

* Mix a craftsman’s pride in workmanship with pragmatism and ability to "ship it!"
* You should be capable of having thoughtful insights about the right development methodology
and level of processes, then make a choice and lead the way

Responsibilities:

Own the day-to-day management of the development process.

* With Product Management, ensure specs are clear, complete, and ready to implement
* Scope new features and help make the right tradeoffs
* Work breakdown & team scheduling: planning who’s doing what, & when
* Make time for continuous refactoring and improving existing code and unit tests,
to keep the codebase clean, maintainable and fun to work on
* With QA, coordinate a build’s entry into testing, giving them control and visibility
to achieve realistic testing
* Daily bug triage and assignment
* Own the recruiting process that will continue to attract and keep the best engineering talent

* Be approximately 25% hands-on initially, to develop your code ownership and learn the system

Experience Required:

* 5+ years experience directly managing a development team of four or more people
* 4+ years experience building a hosted Internet application (ideally consumer-facing) in a flexible agile environment (e.g., a startup!)
* Management experience in more than one company.
Preferably you have seen more than one dev methodology in practice.
* 4+ years hands-on experience as a Java software developer (server-side)
* Prior startup experience
* B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or related field
